Science and Technology Section: Role
The Science and Technology Department (SST - Service pour la Science et la Technologie) of the French Embassy in London has a team of 9 people headed by a Counsellor for Science and Technology.
The SST represents and promotes French scientific research and technology in the United Kingdom.
It is the French contact for British institutions and universities in the field of scientific and technological research and acts as an intermediary between them and French public and private universities and research institutions.
To increase the SST’s efficacy, the post of Deputy Counsellor for Science and Technology is held by the representative in the United Kingdom of Inserm (somewhat similar to the MRC in Britain).
The SST’s three main tasks:
1. Tracking developments in science and technology. It monitors the UK’s R&D policy and scientific and technological activities, and circulates the information obtained to French researchers and public and private research institutions (universities, research bodies, ministries and industry, etc.) This is accessible on the SST site (see below) or by subscription on http://www.adit.fr
2. Promoting exchanges and bilateral and multilateral scientific and technological cooperation. Its remit is to encourage and facilitate bilateral cooperation in R&D between France and the United Kingdom, placing it, whenever appropriate, in the context of the effort to broaden the European dimension and build the European Research Area of knowledge for growth. Especial attention is paid to innovative and interdisciplinary areas through the organization of Franco-British meetings.
3. Promoting French scientific and technological achievements to British public and private institutions and the general public. The SST invites French experts to the UK. In partnership with British institutions, it organizes and/or participates in conferences and events for the general public or specialists. The latest significant results achieved by French research are posted on the website.
