Residence requests from French-employed civilians in Afghanistan are being considered
Afghanistan – Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development
Paris, 21 April 2015
Seven hundred locally hired civilian personnel, most of them Afghan nationals, worked with the French forces in Afghanistan from 2002 to 2014. A commission has been set up to examine their applications to settle in France. Two hundred and fifty-eight applications have been filed. To date, 73 visa applications concerning 179 people have been accepted.
France has a responsibility towards its personnel; it will not shirk this responsibility. Although working with France does not mean that an individual has an absolute right to settle in France, the reality of the risk incurred by the individual must obviously be taken into account.
That’s why the pending applications will be processed within two months. Rejected applications will be reviewed within the same timeframe, at the request of the individuals concerned./.
