Progress made on Package of Measures for Ukraine - Minister
Ukraine – Statements by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, during his joint press briefing with his Ukrainian counterpart (excerpts)
Paris, 8 April 2015
We discussed several points. First, obviously, the situation in eastern Ukraine. A certain amount of progress has been made on implementing the Package of Measures decided in Minsk on 12 February, on the ground, for the ceasefire – despite too many violations – and the withdrawal of heavy weapons. [Progress has been made] on the political front, too, with decisions taken by the Ukrainian government on the revision of the constitution and organization of future elections.
France’s position, as you know, is to ask for the content and timeframe of all the measures validated in Minsk to be respected. We are making every effort, with our German friends in particular, to support the implementation in the framework of the Normandy format meetings.
I also want to salute the work the OSCE has done on the ground, and we’re ready to contribute to the increase in necessary resources for this.
Pavlo Klimkin, Sergei Lavrov, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and I will also shortly have the opportunity of meeting again to go through all these issues in detail.
Beyond this – and we must never lose sight of it –, France is at Ukraine’s side to deepen our partnerships. We’ve had the opportunity over the past few months, of course, to talk a great deal about the crisis in Ukraine, but we mustn’t forget our direct relations.
This of course applies to the economic front, but many other fronts as well. I think Mr Poroshenko, the Ukrainian President, is due to come to Paris on 22 April, and then Mr Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister, is due to come to Paris too.
My friend Pavlo and I talked about ways of preparing these visits so they provide opportunities to strengthen cooperation and working ties between France and Ukraine. (…)./.
