International financial situation – President Sarkozy’s meeting with the main leaders of French banks groups and insurance companies - Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

President Sarkozy held a meeting today at the Elysée Palace with the main leaders of the French bank groups and insurance companies to take stock of the economic and financial situation in the light of the latest developments in the crisis. The Governor of the Banque de France and the chairman of the supervisory authority of insurance companies and mutual benefit associations [ACAM] also attended the meeting, which took place in the presence of the Prime Minister and Mme Christine Lagarde, Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment.
This working session was part of the preparation for the European and international meetings scheduled over the coming weeks. It also gave the President the opportunity to remind banks of their priority mission of financing the economy. Before the end of the week, the government will be announcing new measures in this regard./.
