On Wednesday, 22 November, the French Ambassador presented the insignia of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur to Patricia Roberts at a reception held in the Résidence de France.
Since 1973, the obstetrician Patricia Roberts has also worked without remuneration at the Dispensaire Français. She was one of the UK’s first women obstetricians at a time when her profession was considered exclusively masculine.
Patricia Roberts began her career as Resident Surgeon at Hackney General Hospital in one of the most deprived areas of London. Appointed Senior Lecturer at Charing Cross Hospital, she began a programme of information exchanges with the UK’s main hospitals with a view to developing common procedures in obstetrics and gynaecology and cancer treatment. In 1983 she was responsible for the creation of a modern maternity unit in Newham District Hospital.
For over forty years, Patricia Roberts has cared for French speakers and French nationals in need, thus strengthening the ties of friendship between France and Britain./.
