On 10 May, French Ambassador Gérard Errera took part in a celebration of the Arsenal Double Club’s foreign language modules, a community educational programme combining French, Spanish and German language teaching with football training at Arsenal Football Club. Arsène Wenger, the club’s coach, and Lord Dearing were also present, as were the Spanish Ambassador and German Chargé d’Affaires.

Created in 1998, the Double Club programme is an Arsenal initiative drawing on the Club’s prestige to promote, initially, primary school literacy and numeracy before branching out into other subjects.

The modern foreign language modules are designed particularly for 11-14 year-olds.

Every week, the selected pupils have an hour of football training either with an Arsenal coach or their sports teacher (or both) and an hour of language instruction led by their teacher, with contributions from Arsenal stars who talk in their mother tongue about football, family life and what they do in their spare time. Other resources, linked to football, such as games and quizzes, are also used to make learning a modern language fun.

The French module has been prepared by the Institut francais language centre in cooperation with two pilot schools in London: Parkview Academy and The Compton School. The main Arsenal player for the French module is Gaël Clichy, with Jens Lehmann and Cesc Fabregas participating respectively in the German and Spanish modules.
