Climate/COP21/Russia/implementation of the Paris Agreement – Communiqué issued by the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs
Paris, 30 May 2016
Ségolène Royal, President of COP21, visited Moscow on Monday 30 May, in the framework of her visits to speed up the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
During the visit, Ségolène Royal had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin and the President’s special representative for the climate, Mr Alexander Bedritsky. The COP21 President thanked her interlocutors for Russia’s constructive involvement in the adoption of the Paris Agreement on the climate. She asked them about their wishes in terms of ratification.
The Deputy Prime Minister said Russia will revise its climate actions upwards because it has achieved its reduction target for 2030. The Deputy Prime Minister recalled the desire of the President and the Prime Minister to ratify the agreement, and he said the preparatory document for ratification will be ready by October. Ségolène Royal welcomed this good news and provided information about the Action Agenda coalitions.
On the Action Agenda, Russia has become involved in several coalitions. Ségolène Royal encouraged her interlocutors to join the Carbon Pricing Coalition and the Construction Coalition, and she invited them to the Business Dialogue in Paris on 10 June, which they accepted. She also recalled the importance of the negotiations under way at the ICAO on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry, and at the UN on protecting high seas biodiversity.
The COP21 President spoke to Mr Vladislav Soloviev – CEO of RUSAL, a company which attended the previous Business Dialogues – to take stock of the follow-up. He announced his company’s carbon pricing strategy, which he will set out at the Business Dialogue in Paris, and a coalition of Russian businesses moving in the same direction./.
