Lord Radice receives Legion of Honour (14.05.2005)

Lord Radice was presented with the insignia of Chevalier of the ‘Légion d’Honneur’ by Gérard Errera, the French Ambassador to the UK, on Tuesday, May 10.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr Errera described Lord Radice as a ’frontrunner of reform in the Labour party’ and ‘one of the most prominent spokesmen for the cause of Europe in Britain’, as well as being a ‘central figure in the Franco-British relationship’, as chairman of the Franco-British Council.

On receiving the award, Lord Radice added that ‘Europe works best when France and the United Kingdom can agree over its direction’. He also paid tribute to the Franco-British Council, saying that ‘if it didn’t exist it would have to be invented’.

Lord Radice is a board member of the European Movement, a member of the House of Lords European Union Committee and of the Fabian Society.

He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford and was the Labour MP for North Durham 1973-2001.
