Letter of congratulations from M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, to Mr Manmohan Singh, on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Republic of India
Paris, 24 May 2004
It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest congratulations to you on your appointment as Prime Minister of the Republic of India. The elections which have just taken place are another illustration, were one needed, of the exceptional robustness of Indian democracy. They also bear witness to the Indians’ deep commitment to the secular values to which France feels particularly attached.
To promote a balanced international order respectful of human rights, strengthen the intercultural dialogue and support sustainable, fair development are goals we share. In these troubled times for the international community, it is more necessary than ever for India and France to combine their efforts to achieve them.
Our countries have succeeded in developing a close partnership in every sphere: political, economic, cultural and strategic. I want to assure you of my determination to work with you to strengthen it. With this in mind, I would be delighted to welcome you to Paris as soon as your schedule allows.
I wish you every success in your new duties,
