Turkey/Istanbul attack – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, 12 January 2016

The President denounces the heinous terrorist attack perpetrated today in the tourist area of Sultanahmet, in Istanbul, which killed at least 10 people and injured many others.

He expresses his compassion and solidarity towards Turkey and those countries whose nationals are among the victims, particularly Germany, which has been hit very hard. This vile act of violence must more than ever strengthen our common determination to fight terrorism./.

I was deeply shocked to learn of this morning’s attack in Istanbul, in the tourist area of Sultanahmet, which killed at least 10 people and injured many others.

I utterly condemn this heinous attack and express France’s wholehearted solidarity to the Turkish people and the authorities of that country, which has once again been hit hard.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and close friends.

At my request, crisis units were immediately set up in Paris and Istanbul. A telephone hotline has been set up in Paris: 01 43 17 56 46.

Our Consulate General in Istanbul and the Quai d’Orsay’s crisis and support centre are mobilized.

Our citizens present in Turkey were immediately advised to be vigilant./.
