Paris, 27 September 2008
France welcomes the unanimous adoption of UNSCR 1835, which marks the international community’s concern and unity with respect to Iran’s nuclear programme.
This resolution calls on Iran to implement the demands of the Security Council and the IAEA fully and immediately.
As the IAEA’s Director General has just noted, Iran has failed to provide a response to the Agency’s specific questions on activities that could be linked to nuclear weapons, and has still not suspended her sensitive nuclear activities as the Security Council has asked her to do on five occasions. Nor has Iran responded to the repeated efforts of the Six to open negotiations.
We call on Iran once again to choose negotiations by suspending her sensitive nuclear activities and to prove full transparency on her nuclear programme.
In accordance with our two-track approach combining dialogue and firmness, we will continue to work with our partners among the Six to initiate the negotiations. France also reaffirms her determination to work with her partners on new sanctions to strengthen pressure on Iran if she continues to ignore her international obligations./.
