Paris, 2 July 2009
France welcomes today’s election in Vienna of Yukiya Amano to the post of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Bernard Kouchner has just extended to him his congratulations and warmest wishes of success in carrying out the important duties entrusted to him at the head of the IAEA.
In November Mr Amano will succeed Mohamed ElBaradei, whose three terms of office will have made a major impact on the Agency and its work with the award, in 2005, of the Nobel Peace Prize.
France intends to continue her support for the IAEA’s essential missions in order to confront the challenges presented by the nuclear proliferation threats and promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, ensuring its development under maximum safety, security and non-proliferation conditions.
When carrying out his duties, Yukiya Amano will need the determined backing of all IAEA Member States. He will be able to count on the support of France./.
