French anti-smoking initiative "a great success"

Operation Moi(s) sans tabac has been a clear success with French people – Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health

Paris, 1 December 2016

Marisol Touraine, Minister of Social Affairs and Health, launched Moi(s) sans tabac (1) on 1 November 2016, the first full-scale public health campaign ever organized in France. Prepared with Santé publique France in partnership with Assurance Maladie, this unprecedented event to encourage and help people to quit smoking was a great success, with nearly 180,000 people signed up and substantial active involvement from health professionals and partners.

With almost 180,000 people signed up and over 620,000 kits distributed to help people quit smoking, the first Moi(s) sans tabac was a clear success. This level of participation is also due to the commitment of all the health professionals, including the 17,000 pharmacies taking part in the operation, and the 100 national and more than 3,000 regional partners all over France who worked hard to raise awareness, provide information and support smokers wanting to quit.

• The number of visitors to the www.tabac-info-service.fr website quadrupled, with 1.3 million visits, from mid-October to mid-November.

• The [anti-smoking] resource Tabac Info Service received more than 15,000 calls on the 3989 hotline in October and November – a 35% increase on the same period in 2015. According to smoking cessation specialists from Tabac Info Service, the public campaign was especially well received.

• More than 72,000 smokers have registered on Tabac Info Service’s new support app.

• Many events have been organized in different locations throughout France: special consultations at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital, promotional activities organized by the City of Nantes in parks and gardens, etc.

• Participants are also being galvanized via social media to share their experiences of giving up. There have been up to 10,000 interactions a week on the Facebook page, which has had 69,328 likes.

Moi(s) sans tabac addresses a major public health challenge: the fight against smoking. It is one of the measures in the national smoking reduction programme, and it builds on other strong measures taken by Marisol Touraine, like plain packaging and the increased price of rolling tobacco.

Although the campaign is now over, health professionals and Tabac Info Service are always there to help people stay off cigarettes and to support smokers in their efforts to give up.

(1) The title of an anti-smoking campaign encouraging smokers to give up for one month, Moi(s) sans tabac is a play on words in French, meaning both “me without tobacco” and “a month without tobacco”. The initative was inspired by the UK campaign “Stoptober”, launched in 2012.
