French and German interior ministers hold talks in Berlin

France and Germany vow to uphold EU’s core values

European Union/Germany – Communiqué issued by the Ministry of the Interior

Paris, 8 April 2014

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve met his German counterpart, Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière, in Berlin at the latter’s invitation, for an initial exchange of views on issues within their remits.

The discussions focused, among other things, on the security of the Schengen Area’s external borders, on cooperation between police forces and on European visa policy. In light of the preparation of the EU’s forthcoming five-year work programme, to be adopted in June by the European Council, the two ministers decided to consult each other regularly to seek shared positions to uphold in negotiations.

The two ministers also agreed to step up various measures aimed at strengthening ties between their departments – for example, through the exchange of civil servants – and at pooling certain activities in their networks abroad, particularly in order to combat illegal immigration more effectively./.
