Paris, 13 September 2013

The French President had a meeting with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

The meeting was an opportunity to take stock of the latest developments in the Syria crisis and to coordinate the positions of France and its three important partners on the next steps.

The President and his interlocutors recalled the necessity of remaining firm towards Bashar al-Assad’s regime, in order to deter him from resorting to chemical weapons again and get him to embark on negotiations with a view to a political solution to the Syria crisis.

In this respect, they agreed on the need to step up international support for the democratic opposition to allow it to cope with attacks from the regime, whose obstinacy is playing into the hands of the extremist movements and threatening regional and international security. They highlighted their joint commitment to a united, free Syria in which the security and rights of every community will be respected./.

French President François Hollande spoke this afternoon to United States President Barack Obama.

They agreed to work closely together to examine with the utmost care the appropriateness of the Russian proposal to place all the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons entirely under international control and ensure their actual and total destruction.

These steps are beginning today at the United Nations, with a view to a possible Security Council resolution.

The heads of state recalled their preference for a diplomatic solution but also stressed the importance of keeping all options open. The United States, the United Kingdom and France will combine their efforts in the coming days in order to achieve this./.
