France expresses deep concern about violence in Jerusalem

Jordan/meeting between M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, and His Majesty Abdullah II, King of Jordan – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, 16 September 2015

The President spoke to His Majesty Abdullah II, King of Jordan, today about the situation in Jerusalem, which he discussed yesterday evening with Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Amir of Qatar.

He expressed his deep concern about the increasing number of violent clashes on and around the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem, and about the need for everything to be done to calm the situation down.

The President reiterated that any questioning of the 1967 Temple Mount status quo would carry a major risk of destabilization. He signalled France’s commitment to full respect for the Holy Places.

These events again illustrate the importance of swiftly resuming the talks to make headway on resolving the conflict. This is the thrust of the new international support for the peace process which France has proposed establishing to promote the creation of an independent, sovereign, viable Palestinian state living in peace and security alongside Israel./.
