France deplores increasing use of death penalty in Iraq

Iraq/executions – Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Spokesman

Paris, 2 February 2012

Following the execution of 34 people on 19 January and 17 people on 1 February, France deplores the increase in the use of the death penalty in Iraq, which reflects a worrying drift away from the protection of human rights in that country.

France reaffirms her unwavering opposition to the use of the death penalty, everywhere and in all circumstances. She urges the Iraqi authorities to put a stop to these executions and to commute the sentences of those condemned to death./.
