France congratulates new Lebanese leaders on their election

Lebanon – Conversation between M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, and Mr Saad Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, 3 November 2016

The President spoke to Mr Saad Hariri, who was today named Prime Minister of Lebanon by President Aoun. He congratulated him on the appointment and gave him every encouragement with a view to the swift formation of a unity government.

France is at Lebanon’s side for this new stage. The President reiterated how necessary Lebanon’s unity, stability and security are in the dramatic situation the region is experiencing.

The President also spoke to the outgoing Prime Minister, Mr Tamam Salam, paying tribute to the brave action he has been taking in difficult circumstances for over two years./.

The French President spoke to Mr Michel Aoun, the newly elected President of Lebanon. He offered him his congratulations, his predecessor’s mandate having ended more than two years ago. He confirmed to him France’s unshakeable friendship with his country.

He confirmed to President Aoun France’s determination to continue standing alongside Lebanon and lend it support to maintain its stability, integrity and security in the tragic situation the region is experiencing.

The French President also spoke to the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Mr Nabih Berri, whose commitment to national dialogue he commended. He also paid tribute to the Prime Minister, Mr Tamam Salam, for his action in difficult circumstances. He will speak to the next prime minister once he has been chosen./.
