Nine British World War II veterans, Major General Corran William Purdon, Sir John Gorman, Professor Michael Foot, Derek Eccles, Richard Hargreaves, Sidney Jary, Derek Saint Clair-Stannard, Arthur Staggs and Edward Thurston who displayed exceptional courage during the Normandy and Provence Landings 60 years ago were presented with the insignia of the Légion d’Honneur on Monday, 14 November at 11.30 a.m. at the Résidence de France.
Through the award of this high distinction, the French Government wants to reiterate the gratitude owed to these brave men for their contribution to restoring freedom in Europe.
Some French Lycée pupils watched the ceremony and talked to the veterans.
