Kidnapping of two French nationals in Afghanistan – Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 19 July 2008

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs confirms the abduction of two French nationals working in Afghanistan for the non-governmental organization Action contre la Faim (ACF) [Action Against Hunger].

The Ministry is making active efforts, in both Paris and Kabul, to obtain their release as soon as possible, constantly liaising with the Afghan authorities, ACF leaders and the families. M. Bernard Kouchner has asked for the immediate activation of the Ministry’s crisis centre.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs reiterates that in such matters discretion is essential to the effectiveness of its action.

Targeting aid workers is wholly unacceptable. NGO personnel are working relentlessly and often in very difficult conditions to help the Afghan people./.
