Foreign Minister has "extremely moving" meeting with North Korean refugees

South Korea/North Korean regime – Statements to the press by M. Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, following his meeting with North Korean refugees

Seoul, 24 March 2016

I wanted to hear a human account of the current situation regarding the North Korean regime, of its oppression. I’ll be frank in saying that it was extremely moving to see these four people – from different generations, moreover – who I’d say for me were symbolic of the violence, brutality and oppression of a regime which proclaims freedom but in reality oppresses and starves its people. I was touched by the way one of them put it: “we aren’t born to live but to survive”.

All this encourages France to remain even more determined to act with South Korea in the framework of the United Nations Security Council and also in the European framework. This justifies the sanctions being effectively enforced, stepped up, in order to drive back the regime and so that we can finally put an end to this current intolerable situation./.
