‘Seul tu ne peux rien, mais ensemble, on peut tout’: the words of Emmaüs founder Abbé Pierre quoted by the Duchess of Cornwall as she honoured homelessness charity Emmaüs UK at its 25th anniversary reception at the French Residence.
The Duchess, Royal Patron of Emmaüs UK, was greeted by Ambassador Sylvie Bermann.
The ceremony was marked by touching speeches by the Duchess, Selwyn Image, Founder of Emmaüs UK, who had known and worked with Abbé Pierre first hand; humanitarian author Terry Waite, who became President of Emmaüs UK shortly after his release from captivity in Lebanon in 1992; and Simon Grainge, CEO of Emmaüs UK.
Mary Rigg from Hastings (below, left), as well as other Companions, took part in the celebrations.
Mrs. Rigg met the Duchess for the first time three years ago when she accompanied her on a trip to Paris to meet members of the Emmaüs community there.
Founded in 1991, Emmaüs UK supports over 28 communities and over 700 people throughout the country, offering homes, work and a second chance to regain their dignity. Find out more here about their work: www.emmaus.org.uk.
