Symbolically held where the Lancaster House Treaty was signed in November 2010, a particularly warm meeting between Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and his British counterpart, Michael Fallon, provided the opportunity to discuss the forthcoming fifth anniversary of this founding treaty.

Following on from it, and at a time when the two countries have just decided to make wholly significant additional efforts for their defence, the ministers looked at ways of deepening bilateral defence cooperation.

Apart from the discussion of bilateral flagship projects, such as the prospect of the Franco-British Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF) entering into operational service in April 2016, and the development of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), the dinner also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the strategic context, at a time when Britain’s Strategic Defence and Security Review is under way.
