Biometrics challenges and standards: what’s at stake?

The Science and Technology Department of the French Embassy in the UK is pleased to announce the next scientific public lecture, given in English

Biometrics challenges and standards: what’s at stake?

by Prof. Bernadette Dorizzi, Groupe des Ecoles des Telecommunications, Paris and Dr. Farzin Deravi, University of Kent, Canterbury

Biometrics is the science and technology that allows identification of a unique individual. It usually refers to technologies used for measuring and analyzing human physiological characteristics such as fingerprints, eye irises, facial patterns... In the face of increasing security threats across the globe and the extensive plans for the deployment of biometric systems by national governments to counter these threats, there has been a parallel rush to make biometric standards.
This double-bill seminar will first give an overview of four promising biometric modalities, their technical challenges and what could imply their large scale usage for the citizen. This will be followed by the presentation of the past, present and future prospects of international standardisation amid conflicting national interests and priorities.
The two presentations will be followed by a drink reception.
