Election in Iraq – Statement by Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Today a large number of Iraqis turned out to vote in the general election, despite a new outburst of terrorist violence which killed nearly 40 people and injured very many others.
I salute the courage of the Iraqi voters. Today, they decided on their future and that of their children.
This turnout attests to the Iraqi people’s resolve to turn the page on the ordeals of the past, to their rejection of terrorism and determination to build a democratic Iraq looking to the future.
France, with her European partners, will stand at the Iraqis’ side in their battle for reconstruction and democracy./.
