High up the tallest mountains in the world you’ll find some of the harshest environments to visit, but imagine working there as well. On 15 March our collaboration with the Royal Institution will bring Prof Jean-Paul Richalet to London. He works with alpine athletes to study how they can stay at top performance level on the mountain, avoiding ‘mountain sickness’, where the body is starved of oxygen at high altitudes. He’ll be paired with Dr Mike Grocott from UCL, whose research could help you in the future even if you don’t plan on scaling any mountains. The body can be starved of oxygen at other crucial times – like in intensive care – so he and his team hope that insight into staying healthy on a mountain will save lives in the hospital too. Just two days after the event he’ll be off on an expedition to Mount Everest for the largest human biology study ever at high altitude. In purpose built exercise laboratories positioned along the trek to Mount Everest base camp, they will study over two hundred volunteers as they climb progressively higher into the thin atmosphere. More detailed research will be performed on a group of physician-scientists planning to climb to the summit of Everest.
Join us to hear these two intrepid researchers talk about their work. And that’s not all – in keeping with the French love for the cinema, this special event at the French Institute’s Ciné Lumière will include the screening of the film Himalaya after the talk.
Himalaya is a true story set in a small village during the annual herd migration. Amidst the perilous trails of the vast Himalayan mountains and rich Nepalese valleys, against the cold, the wind and the snow, tragedies and love stories unfold into a tale of power, pride and glory.
